They closed a lot of their stores months ago to try to avoid this, but unfortunately they will all go away soon. I am not digging this at all, for my favorite stores have always been:
Music stores (almost all gone)
Video game stores (still thriving, but they are next)
Book stores (dying)
Comic stores (still have a hardcore audience to keep them afloat, though growing older)
So basically, I enjoy going into all types of media stores and seeing what they have. However, with all things going digital, it has really done a number on the above. Yes, I know we are becoming a digital society, but I ask, at what cost? Another 15 thousand American jobs are now lost because of the Border's closure. I read today that more layoffs and lost jobs will occur now at various publishers, as Borders was responsible for a large part of many book's distribution.
It is a complete domino effect, one that is going to make life harder for all of us, economy wise. I guess times change and I am not going to say "let's stop this computer stuff" but it really has done a number on our society and economy. It takes far less people to make and distribute electronic media, which is great if you are a business - not so much if you want a thriving economy. Plus, it is far more easier to copy electronic media which leads to loss of revenue through piracy. Finally, if everyone is buying their stuff on the internet, and most of the internet is not being taxed, what is to make up for the loss of government revenue? Right now our entire infrastructure is falling apart and all types of government cannot fix the problems and instead are cutting back on police, teachers and firemen.
These are major problems that have spawned from the transitioning to e-media. I know it is not popular, but it is something that needs fixing.
