Taylor....is winning....an argument *explodes* hey teX, where did you learn JS? Any good recommendations for a book(s)? My last post pretty much ended his argument, I don't know what you mean by that? If he doesn't like big avatars he can turn them off.

Oh, for once, I didnt consider you part of the argument. In my mind, it was Taylor and TK and you came in with a solution. Peacefully. *explodes again*

I always introduce solutions. I should be given the ACW solution award.

I'm not seeing the point of an argument. With the code I posted it's pretty much impossible to have screen stretching avatars if the 'maximum width/height' is set correctly. 135x135 didn't stretch the screen, so allowing people to have 128x128 at least shouldn't cause any harm.
Oh, and I picked up JS along the way. Back in highschool I did some web programming with JS, although when I later took programming classes I used that knowledge to learn JS off of the internet. I do have a book around here somewhere, although I'm not sure where. I like to keep a book on each language for reference, basically searching Amazon for the most popular one.
I'm not too fond of JS though, it's way too quirky. The whole 'var' declaration is annoying, as you have to go and later parse types manually which can be confusing. I'm used to more structured OOP-related things such as C# and PHP. Bleh, enough rambling =p.

Im looking to learn something this summer. I picked up a C#/Cocoa book so I can make apps for my Mac. You don't think JS is worth it?

Depends what you're doing. IIRC your college course is geared towards game programming, in that case it doesn't really apply to you. JS is just used to make websites interactive. I'd focus on C# since it's such a commonly used language that any knowledge of that is good knowledge. Personally, I'm spending the summer studying up on Java since my entire university course is pretty much based around it.

It's not that JS isn't worth it, as it is a very useful language. My problem is JS is much different from something such as C#, due to how it's built. By the way, when I say C# I refer to the web end of things, as I haven't really dealt with system programming too much. I guess I could just refer to it as ASP.NET...ah whatever.
Anyway, ASP.NET/C# is an Object Oriented Language, and it is strictly defined. Meaning that you can say:
int x = 4;
Which will get you the integer 4. Javascript on the other hand is not strictly defined, and not directly object oriented. So in JS you'd have:
var x = 4;
Which would give you a 'var' (some abstract type) and then to get an integer out of it you'd have to parse it as an integer, like I did with the avatar code. In short, learn JS AFTER you learn something OO like C#. It'll make things a lot easier.

Taylor, you did not recall correctly. My college study is not geared toward game programming, althought we did have to make games for assignments. So far the courses were just intro to programming and stuff. And tex, I spend the last two semesters working with java.

Well then the transition to JS shouldn't be too hard. Just prepare for some annoying little quirks.

Its my college course thats geared towards game programming. And I am learning actionscript which from the looks of things is somewhat similar to JavaScript.

I believe it is (syntactically that is). I haven't messed too much with Flash other than making short movies, although some of the panning cameras that are made with AS are very powerful.
