The way you say it though, Scott, you're implying that basically every band might be its own genre. Now I can't back this up based on your point, because I've never heard any of Madball's stuff. I guess I'm a type of guy who likes to generalise stuff. I mean if I take two completely different bands - Arcade Fire and The Smiths - they're both completely different, but I would class both bands as "Indie".
I would know that they are "Indie" and I find that more comfortable in categorising than, as Wikipedia classes them anyways, Arcade Fire as "Post-punk revival" and "Baroque pop". I mean what the hell are those two meant to mean? I would have absolutely no idea.
I believe in sub-genres like "power metal", "heavy metal" etc, and with the assistance of music encyclopedias I can get my head around this. I'm just saying that I prefer to generalise bands pretty easily. I can link both Dragonforce and Metallica in the same "metal" genre, even if they're totally different. It's the sub-genres that define them, but I don't need sub-genres to define my music. It's a subjective thing.
I mean likewise, I can put every rock band into, simply, the "rock" genre. Within that I'm happy to separate bands into pub rock, psychadelic rock, prog rock, glam rock, pop rock etc, but I can happily generalise all those bands as "rock bands".
Which gets a bit tricky when you get bands who cross genres. Here, Queen come into play. They've done Rock, Metal, New Wave, Punk, Disco, Dance, Jazz, Country, Opera, Gospel, Folk, Vaudeville, Soul and The Blues, just off the top of my head >_>

Here's a few unpopular ones. - My guilty pleasure is St. Anger. It's some pretty catchy stuff. Don't get me wrong, it is by no means the best Metallica album ever. If another band did it, I wouldn't have a problem with it. Oddly enough, God Forbid wants to do a remake of St. Anger and call it "St. N****r". (<--- click for MetalSucks story) - As awesome as they are, it feels like a chore whenever I try and listen to an album version of an Opeth song. I like the music video/single versions because they're shorter. No offense to Opeth or any prog band but I have the attention span of an ant when it comes to that stuff. - I know I have stated my opinion on black metal early on in this topic but now that I think about it, Satyricon isn't bad. Other than them, Behemoth and old COB, black metal pretty much gives metal a bad name. Even death metal contains gentlemen compared to the church-burning, mass-murdering, Nazi-worshipping idiots of black metal. - I liked Bullet for My Valentine's first record. The second one sucked though. I felt fucking embarassed when I listened to "Forever and Always". - I agree with Scott. Serj Tankian is awesome. - Lastly, another guilty pleasure of mine is Korn. You may feel free to discredit my musical tastes upon reading this sentence.

Ah, I see. I agree with the silly sub genres that are completely ridiculous, but yeah, some bands just break the mold of common genres and for some reason someone has to categorize them. Then when they become popular, the genre explodes. Most sub genres have a good reason for being defined in the way they are, whether it's a certain way the music is made, certain elements of guitar playing, the vocal style, the lyrical style, etc.
Maybe it's because I listen to a diverse amount of music that I can recognize certain sub genres as being necessary, or that I'm a musician, though as you say "Baroque Pop"...yeah, that kinda shit I agree with as being far too pedantic.

All of this makes me wonder... Who in the holy hell decided to come up with the term "post-rock", "post-metal", etc, etc. That's just dumb.

What would you call it? There's no other name for it. (Yeah, I'm still around. I just stumbled onto this topic. There's far too much I can say here, and I don't have the attention span or time to do it in.)

Is it an unpopular opinion to dislike Mastodon? >_>
And Mark, I like the guitar work in the new BFMV album but I prefer the old sound.

I've heard stories about Iraqi prisoners being tortured via music. Playing "Forever and Always" at full blast non-stop would be enough to torture about 100,000 of them.

Lemme start off: - Michael Romeo is the most skilled guitarist ever. The only people that can come close to him are Steve Vai, John Pertrucci and Buckethead Actually, I think the most skilled guitarist is now Orianthi, an Australian gal in her mid twenties. She's played with Eric Clapton, Stevie Vai, and Carlos Santana. Santana himself said, and I quote, "This ain't cute anymore, it's a serious asswhoopin... If I was going to pass the torch to anyone, she'd be my first choice" And she recently also did a guitar duet with Stevie Vai. Anywho.... - Non-preachy Christian rock bands RULE! Even if your not really Christian (IE: Skillet/ 12 Stones) - Metalcore rules!!! Except for that bitchy emo crap... like Devil Wears Prada and shit... Go KSE, ATR, LoG!!! - Metallica 1995+ is the worst metal band ever! - Metallica 1980-1994 are one of the best metal bands ever! - Neil Pert is a drum god! - Lil Wayne rules, but Soulja Boy should be shot - he's a disgrace a hip hop music everywhere - Eminem>50 Cent - Most country can suck my sweaty, hairy, white ballsack! Stop singing about you rode the bull yesterday and why you need another beer! I do not care! Garth Brooks is the shit, tho - Dragonforce are gods among men. - Pop music sucks! The Jonas Brothers are fags who are famous ONLY because they gangbanged Miley Cyrus during a break while filming Hannah Montana.... THATS IT! THATS THE ONLY REASON WHY THEY ARE FAMOUS. Today's teen girls need to get over themselves and start getting the hots for REAL man like Adam D.... I'd so do him if I were a girl!

*googles Orianthi*
She looks like a cross between Duffy and Pete Burns. Ew.
Anyways Brian May is the most skilled guitarist of all time

From the top of my head, my favorite metalcore bands are: Lamb of God, Killswitch Engage, Parkway Drive, Atreyu, All That Remains, Avenged Sevenfold (their newer mainstream stuff is pretty sweet too), God Forbid, Unearth, Underoath, Trivium, Psychostick, Evacuate Chicago, August Burns Red, Bullet for My Valentine and Misery Signals. There's probably more I'm forgetting, considering how much this genre tends to copy itself. >_>
