Never one to let his emotions get the better of him, the Senator nonetheless mutters something under his breath. We can’t know if Yoko hears the words clearly, but she gives a hint of a smile; evidently she is starting to make inroads on what at first seemed like an almost impossible task. However, her own energy is starting to wane under the relentless pressure of the Senator’s attacks, and the Senator himself can sense that a breakthrough might be just around the corner; he and Yoko swap a couple of blows before the Senator tries for the Filibuster. Yoko though is super – alert for this threat and blocks it; she backs off, but this is what the Senator is expecting and he bursts forward with sudden speed, clubbing Yoko down to the mat and elbow – dropping rapidly to keep her there. The crowd stands up as the Senator again goes for the legs, this time with the Victory Lock II; Yoko quickly turns the hold over, but the Senator has a strategy for just such an occurrence and sits back to send the pressure back in its intended direction. Yoko grimaces, the combination of a long match and targeted attacks means that her legs are almost swelling with lactic acid buildup – but she can hear the fans calling, crying, almost begging her not to give in, and as the seconds tick past even the Senator looks a little impressed. Yoko draws her energies together and pulls against the Senator, who finds himself being brought forward – the hold teeters on the critical point and the exertion the Senator is investing is evident from the sweat on his face. Finally, the hold abruptly breaks down – it’s not clear exactly if Yoko forced the break, or if the Senator opted to cut his losses. What is certain is that both competitors are genuinely tiring now, and that a resolution must surely come within the next ten to fifteen minutes before the pair exhaust themselves entirely.
Chants of “Yoko” and “Y-2-K-O!” reverberate around the arena; even Stanton seems to be paying closer attention. There seems to be a sea change in the flow of the match; Yoko raises her hands in the air as she circles, watching the Senator, and the crowd responds by getting louder still. Without warning the pair break ranks and clash; the Senator goes for another Partisan Kick, but Yoko gets in first and nails a swinging neckbreaker that makes the ring shudder. She goes for a pin which gets just short of 2; Yoko leaps back up, and as the Senator rises again Yoko dances around him and jumps on to his back, scissoring his waist and applying a choke with both arms. The Senator, though, has seen this sort of thing before; he drops on to his back without a telltale jump first, and his weight crushes Yoko’s chest as well as creating an impromptu pin. Yoko has to battle hard to get out just after the 2 count; now with the initiative, the Senator gets a hold of one of Yoko’s ankles and gives it a vicious twist so that Yoko cries out. As Yoko gets up, she feels pain on putting her foot down, and the distraction of this lets the Senator get in close to add agony at the other end with a cross armbar. Yoko struggles free after about 20 seconds, but it’s clear that all the weardown moves are having a strong cumulative effect, and the Senator gets hold of Yoko, lifting her for the Polariser. Stanton’s eyes gleam; Ginger yells, and Yoko writhes free before Senator can finish the move. Yoko turns him around, kicks him in the gut and signals with both hands for the Flying Guillotine; the crowd goes bonkers as Yoko hits the ropes for extra power, but as she jumps up and commits the Senator springs his carefully laid trap – he counters the move into a spectacular Capture Bomb, and there is almost chaos as the fans realize this could be it. The Senator pins and hooks the leg…..1…..2….thr – NO! Yoko gets her shoulder up, and the roof shifts a little on its moorings as the fans find reason to breathe again…..
