Closing Segment: Joy Ride (Credit: Latino)
The ACW helicopter has been pressed into service at short notice; as it races through the night sky, the on – board camera focuses in on a vehicle being driven erratically. It slews back and forth across multiple lanes of traffic, shifting all the way across the road so that oncoming vehicles have to swerve like stunt drivers. Then, there’s a crackle, and a fuzzy, distorted voice is heard as listening equipment picks up the sound from the cab’s internal radio.
Latino: Ha-ha hey, it’s one hell of ride huh London? You know, I can drive on the left side of the road and people swerve just for me! Hmmmmmm……. I wonder what happens if I keep driving on this side? Do you think we will crash?
The car jinks hard to the side, just barely missing a huge juggernaut. There’s a loud bump, presumably from London being hurled against one side of the vehicle.
London: You sick fuck! You are doing all this shit because of a damn car?!
The cab swerves back onto the right side of traffic and takes a quick right, jumping the lights.
Latino: Oh, you think this is all about a car? I don’t care about that piece of tin. You see I couldn’t care less about that shit. All that matters to me is revenge…..because when I’m done, you won’t be around any more….
The vehicle is picking up serious speed now; as it hurtles along the helicopter cam just about picks up a shot of a large sign at the roadside: “DANGER: BRIDGE UNDER CONSTRUCTION”.
London’s obviously seen the sign, as when he’s heard again his voice is much more urgent in tone.
London: Look you crazy Rican, you better stop this damn cab. This bridge isn’t even finished yet. If you keep driving we are going to go over the bridge!
Latino: That’s the idea you little fuck, except I won’t be going over….you’re taking this flight alone.
No more dialogue is heard from the car, bur instead there’s the sound of breaking glass, and then the car weaves about while slowing down. It comes to a halt just a little way from the bridge, and the copter lands close by. The camera crew jumps out and runs, and finally some light is shed on the situation.
The glass separating the front and back seats of the vehicle has been kicked in, and the crew is further startled when London also shatters one of the passenger windows with his feet and climbs out, bearing a few cuts from the shattered partition. The driver’s door is thrown open, and Latino is out in a flash; marks around his neck show that London managed to choke him enough to force him to stop the cab. London tries to make a run for it, but Latino is faster and he tackles London to the ground. The pair roll over and over, punching and gouging, until London gets his hand to a piece of construction rubble and smashes it into Latino’s face. Latino yells and covers his eyes; London gets up, and screams with rage at Latino, kicking him, until suddenly Latino produces a punch to the stomach to stop this. Latino punches again, but this time London dodges, picks up Latino and gives him a back body drop onto the rough, unfinished cement surface. Latino continues to howl with pain as London walks away, his only thought being to escape this hell………but Latino isn’t about to let that happen, and with a scream of rage he charges down his foe, clotheslining London from behind and dropping him to one knee. Without a single sign of remorse, Latino nails London with a piledriver, and the audience in the arena cries out in shock. Both men are a bloody mess; it takes Latino several moments to rise, but London’s in far worse condition and is barely moving. Latino stands the barely conscious London up, and with a final burst of effort Latino runs forward and hurls London face – first right through the back window of the cab with a sickening crash. The crowd is still dumbstruck as Latino bundles London’s protruding legs into the vehicle, and London’s flesh is scraped and gashed all over his body.
Latino: Holy hell, he’s a big man!
In obvious pain himself, Latino staggers back to the front of the cab and slumps into the seat. Without closing the door, Latino restarts the car and puts his foot to the floor; the tyres scream, and then the car jumps forward, accelerating to 70 miles an hour in only a few seconds. Barely 20 feet from the edge of the incomplete bridge, Latino throws himself out of the car and is sent rolling, covering him in cuts and bruises. There’s a huge scream, and then silence from the fans as the taxi gracefully flies off of the bridge; the camera crew run forward as a gigantic splash is heard. Latino too crawls to the edge, and the camera sees what he sees; the back of the car sinking horrifyingly fast into the freezing depths of the river below.
No - one in the arena, from the lowest of the stagehands to the men in the corporate hospitality boxes, is able to grasp what they’ve just seen…<br>
Except for one person.
Watching the live feed alone in the Demon Pit, Ridley looks at the expression on Latino’s face, and silently wonders if it bears any resemblance to that which his own father wore, on that dark night 30 years previously.
Latino watches until the car disappears, and then picks himself up, with a look which is pained and tired…..yet satisfied.
Latino: Have a nice swim, London….. I hope you don’t come back up.
Latino stands, and calmly walks away into the night, its darkness a reflection of that which now shrouds his heart and soul.
Fade to Black.
End of Show.
