On the surface, Latino had gathered his crew together. “All of you, listen closely. I want you to head for the exit, and as soon as you get out run to the ship. Yoko are you getting this?”
Yoko spoke over his short – range communicator. “Yes, but-”
“No buts. Just get airborne and get away as far as you can – this whole planet is going to be blown to pieces.”
The crew started to argue, but Latino would have none of it. “I’m staying – we can’t risk any of these things escaping. Now get going!”
Reluctantly, the group began to edge toward the door, but as they got there they heard the sound of engines firing. “HEY!” cried Amo, “Wasn’t Yoko supposed to wait for us?”
Latino was straight back on the radio. “Yoko! What are you doing?”
“If the White Hole is closed, the portal closes as well, correct?”
Latino glanced at Kross, who nodded. “Apparently…so?”
“Then I have an idea.”
As the battle raged on, Ginger paced back and forth; this was the hardest decision he’d ever had to make. “General, we’re ready,” came 004’s voice over the com. Ginger sighed, and closed his eyes; the Starventure only had one Armageddon class fission torpedo, but one was all you needed. “Very well. On my mark – 3,2,1-“
“Wait! Please, don’t fire!”
Ginger and everyone else was startled by the voice. “Who is this? And what are you doing on an encrypted channel?”
“I don’t have time to explain, sir. I’m…… a pilot of a private craft, and I think I know how the white hole can be shut down.”
Ginger furrowed his brow. “I won’t ask how you know what that thing is, I’m out of options. What’s your plan?”
“To close the hole with a massive plug, sir – a huge mass of rock.”
“A rock mass? Explain.”
“I would require the assistance of your larger craft, sir. I would assume control of your weapons systems briefly, and fire a concentrated blast at one of the orbiting mineral satellites to knock it out of its orbit. The mass would be sent spinning across space, collide with the white hole, and eliminate it.”
“How could you possibly control all of our weapons systems at once? You’d need the mind of a supercomputer.”
“Ah, now that would be telling, sir. But as you said, you don’t have that many options – so will you allow me to try?”
Ginger looked at the people gathered around him; they were unsure like him, but Wyvern stepped forward. “We don’t have any better ideas, sir.”
“All right. I’m sorry, your name…?”
“Yoko, sir,”
“All right Yoko, what do you need from us?”
“Nothing General, just don’t be alarmed if your ship’s computers start behaving oddly. Trust me.”
The voice cut itself out. Wyvern walked forward and looked out of the view screen. “Is she doing what I think she’s doing?”
“I don’t know,” said Ginger. “What’s your thought, Commander?”
“She’s playing pool with planets.”
Wyvern had hit the nail on the head. On board the Wanderer, Yoko had set the main table up to project a holographic representation of the local planets; as it was a hologram like her she could interact physically with it. She held a virtual cue in her hand, and a holographic beer in the other; Yoko did not actually drink, but she was trying to get herself loosened up, recreating the atmosphere of casual evenings past when Amo and the others had started to teach her to play. She walked around the table, checking all the angles, and then took up position for the shot; in the background, her incredible chipset was priming and targeting the weapons systems of the Great Fox and Starventure, and those aboard simply had to watch as their ships were run by someone else. Yoko ran her tongue around her lips; lined up the shot, and then with a fluid movement struck the hologram of one of the planets….

Wounded and exhausted, the humans in the temple were down to their last few rounds of ammunition; Ridley had cut into his double numerous times, but he could not deliver a fatal blow and his lack of condition was telling on him. Ridley snarled at the fake, but staggered backward a few paces and Rose cried out as the doppelganger swiped his blade, sending Ridley’s own weapon across the floor. Laughing, the fake jammed his blade through Ridley’s shoulder, and Rose was simply cast aside as she tried to bring down the self proclaimed leader of the void creatures. “The age of man is over…… my brothers, kill them all!”
Hysterical laughter broke out in the room. “Dude, that’s so lame!” laughed Bob. “Did you use some actor off Days of our Lives?”
AK wrinkled her nose, but had to laugh with everyone else. “Sorry, I am making this up on the fly, you know. Do you want me to finish this or what?”
“Of course we do! After a line like that the guy HAS to be in line for a nasty end,” grinned RDK. “Very true. So, back up in space, we’ve got the largest - scale game of pool in history being played……”
An even bigger drama was climaxing in the space around Kalia; Yoko’s “shot” had sent multiple missiles into one of the nearby planets, and now it was hurtling across the local area at enormous speed. But as everyone on the ships watched, it was obvious that Yoko’s shot was way off course; it wasn’t even going to come close to the white hole. “Starventure, we have no choice,” said Ginger over the com. “Prepare to destroy Kalia – “
“Sir, wait! Look!” cried Oliver; the planet that Yoko had fired upon was about to connect with a second, larger planet. The two planets collided; as the group watched, the second planet’s rotation appeared to speed up, and it began to follow a curving course influenced by its spin. The larger planet travelled more slowly than the first, but as it arced through space Ginger’s expression became one of amazement – and then alarm. “It’s going to hit! Everyone, brace yourselves!”
The planet slowed even more in the current of matter coming from the white hole, but its sheer size meant that it had enough momentum to reach the centrepoint of the rift. There was an incredible pulse of light, and this time the shockwave was so strong that all the remaining ships were thrown back from Kalia…… It took a few moments for everyone to recover, but as they did so those onboard the Great Fox could hear laughing. Wyvern pulled himself to his feet, still mirthful. “The little minx…..that was a trick shot!”
In the temple, the shadow creatures howled; they were sensitive to the disruptions in the white hole. The light streaming from the archway spire suddenly increased as the polarity was reversed, and the fake Ridley roared with fury as cracks began to appear in the structure. “No! This cannot be……we will not go back to that place!”
The creature roared again, and turned; and it saw itself reflected in the real Ridley’s eyes. Ridley smiled, and even the nightmare was afraid. “Fine then,” Ridley whispered, “if you like it here, stay.”
Without even a tiny flinch, Ridley drew out the creature’s sword from his shoulder, flipped it in his hand, and stabbed his double through the neck. Screaming in pain, the creature staggered into the centre of the chamber, and as one the other humans emptied their weapons into the beast. It fell to its knees, its form becoming unstable; behind it, its companions were fleeing through the collapsing portal. Kross stepped forward and held brandished his own weapon. “For all our faults, this universe is ours…… be gone!”
Kross swung down his blade and split the creature head to groin; a cheer went up as the corpse fell, and then everyone had to dive to the floor as the portal archway blew itself out of existence. Only the real Ridley remained on his feet; he surveyed the scene, and bent down to pick up his weapon, still glowing with its accumulated power. Silently he paced over to Rose and lifted her, and Rose threw her arms around him as if she’d never let go. Ridley smiled, for the first time with real happiness. “I promised you I would never forget about you,” he whispered; as the dust settled the others were starting to stir. “Let’s take our leave, shall we? We’ll have plenty of time to deal with our “friends” here later.” He held Rose around the waist, and raised his sword high; there was another pulse of light, and then the pair were gone before anyone could think about stopping them.

Surion stood up and brushed himself down; he looked about him, and cursed. “Damn! Those insurgents have given us the slip!” Outside, the sound of a ship taking off was heard. “That sounds like Skurai making a getaway as well,” said Predator. “I shouldn’t concern yourself too much with that,” said Kross softly, “I’m sure we’ll be hearing a lot more from them all in the near future.” Surion sighed. “Oh well, I’ll settle for the fact that we’re still alive. Good job men.”
“Yes, yes, excellent work everyone,” came a voice from the entrance. General Ginger walked in; the Space Corps personnel saluted, and Ginger returned the gesture. “I suspect you’ve all spent as much time on this planet as you’d wish for…… let’s get back to the ships, and we’ll head for home.” The marines filed out; Latino glanced at his own crew. “We should be on our way too….let’s go before anyone thinks to check our records.” The Wanderer team were sidling toward the exit, but Ginger was too sharp to let them sneak out as well. “Ahem…… are you the owner of the ship Galaxy Wanderer, by any chance?”
Latino stopped and swallowed hard. “Uhh….yes. Is there a problem?”
Ginger raised an eyebrow. “Not with me personally, no. That’s an excellent “pilot” you have there…..I’d keep her a secret, if you catch my drift.”
Latino was surprised, but then he smiled. “We will, General, we will. I suspect Yoko’s getting a bit lonely – why don’t you guys go and check she’s all right?” The rest of the crew took the hint and hurried out; Ginger was leaving as well, along with Kross and Bob. Latino took one last look around, and then turned to see Alicia waiting for him, leaning up against a wall. “So, you’re off again?” she said. Latino thought about what they’d just been through. “Yea, but we won’t be going far. I’m sure that if you tune into our radio frequency you can find me….I’d like it if you called once in a while.”
“I will do…… I have no idea where from, though. As of now I think I’m out of a job.”
“I wouldn’t be so sure, Sista,” came a voice from behind them. RDK winked. “After all, the druidians are back in a big way…… I’d like to see Philips push his cuts bill through after this.” Alicia’s eyes lit up, and she looked at RDK. “So you’ll be staying with the team, then?” RDK nodded. “Someone’s got to keep an eye on you and BK, haven’t they?”
RDK laughed heartily as he strolled out. Latino and Alicia were left alone in the chamber; they took a last look at the ruined portal. “Strange…… this feels like an ending and a beginning at the same time” said Alicia. Latino smiled, and took her hand. “If it’s an ending, shall we make it a happy one?”
“I think that would be a great idea.”
Latino and Alicia jumped at Yoko’s voice. “Have you been listening on everything?” said Latino. “Of course. After all, Space Corps directive 50869, and all that.” Alicia and Latino looked confused. “Remind me chica, what does that say again?”
“All space – themed tales must end with the dashing rogue flying away into space while a stirring soundtrack plays.”
Silence. “All right, I made it up.”
Alicia grinned. “Who cares?”
“Not me. Let’s go…… I have to regain my title as ship’s pool deity.”
Arm in arm, the reunited pair strolled out, and their ships rocketed skywards, towards a new day and the promise of adventures to come……
But that’s another story.
The room was very quiet; the fire had burned down to nothing but embers, and no one spoke for a few moments. AK smiled and finished her drink before standing up. “Well, there you go. Not the world’s most original story, but a story none the less. And with that, I’m off to bed.”
Slowly the other people in the room reached a similar decision, and leaving all the mess to clear up in the morning they wended their weary way up to bed… to dream of titles, of fame, and all the things they would do with the coming of the new year.
Outside, the snow continued to fall….. a perfect conclusion to ACW’s first Christmas together.
The End.
